Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Issues of 1948
The commemorative stamp of 1948 for Mahatma Gandhi has become one of the most popular stamps to have been issued in the course of the 20th century. The book excellently presents all aspects to interest the collector, from Gandhi's history in the background to the printing details of stamps. Most valuable of all is the section devoted to the Gandhi "SERVICE" overprint issue. These stamps being so rare to find it makes any useful study extremely difficult if not impossible.
This book investigates various aspect of the Gandhi memorial issue of 1948 starting from its design, diplomacy, issue, postal usage and overprints. These were the first commemorative stamps of Independent India and the only set of stamps printed outside India after its independence. An attempt has been made to consolidate a series of early investigations and new revelations in a manner that throws insight onto one of the most popular issues of Independent India.
